Currently in the state of Louisiana we have the South American giant apple snail (Pomacea maculata). The snail was likely introduced to the Southeastern US through the aquarium pet trade. The snails harm crawfish, rice, frogs and freshwater fish production. The snails also lay toxic eggs, clog pipes, drainage ditches and canals. The Apple Snails are just one example but other invasive species include the Lionfish, Cuban Tree Frog, Asian Carp, water hyacinth, giant salvinia, and Chinese tallow populations. Human consumption and processing of these populations for money generation would be a unique approach for the state of Louisiana. Though it is not unheard of in other parts of the US. For example the state of Florida has adopted these practices in its management of its own invasive populations. Here are a few animals currently used by Florida to generate profit for the state: the green iguana, burmese python and lionfish. Louisiana can potentially do the same.
